The Different Forms of Eye Disease

Eye disease and other conditions that can affect your vision come in different forms. Dr. Grifasi and the rest of the team at L’occhio put patient education and awareness at the forefront when discussing eye disease with patients.

If we spot early signs of eye disease or other conditions, we can begin working on preparing your personalized treatment plan. Preserving your long-term visual health is our priority, and it all starts with consistent eye exams.

Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding of your normally clear lens in your eye. They can cause symptoms like blurry vision, dim or yellowed colors, and difficulty seeing at night.

Cataracts begin when proteins in your eye clump together, partially obscuring light from reaching your retina, the thin layer of tissue that lines the back of your eye. They generally occur due to natural age-related changes in the eyes.

If left untreated, cataracts can cloud your vision, making even basic tasks like reading or driving a challenge. Fortunately, cataract surgery can help restore clarity and improve your quality of life.

We refer you to surgeons and provide pre-cataract surgery evaluation and post-op care.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which is responsible for sending visual information to your brain.

There are different types of glaucoma, but most of them develop without noticeable symptoms and can lead to permanent vision loss if not caught and managed. High intraocular pressure (IOP) is a risk factor for glaucoma, so we use tonometry to measure it during your eye exam.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive disease caused by damage to your macula, affecting your detailed central vision. This damage can make daily activities like reading and driving much more difficult. There are 2 main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease and occurs when the macula thins with age.
  • Wet AMD is less common and can cause faster and more severe vision loss. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of the eye that can leak fluid.

Our team will discuss the next steps to AMD management during your appointment.

Diabetes can increase your risk of developing eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is a primary vision-loss concern for those with diabetes.

Diabetic retinopathy causes damage to the blood vessels in the retina. While the condition can initially progress without symptoms, as it advances, it can cause:

  • Blurry vision
  • Loss of central vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Black spots or holes in your vision

Dr. Grifasi will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have about your vision during your diabetic eye exam.
